Gunzgen Sud gas station, east-bound. This is a good gas station and restaurant to catch a ride east on the A1 toward Zurich, St. Gallen or Munich, or south-east on the A2 towards Luzern or Italy.―Anonymous, July 2016

Very Good Place to get to Switzerland. Many swiss people buy stuff in austria because it's cheaper and go back to Switzerland. Got to St. Gallen within Minutes.

Generaly, it's hard to get from Zurich, but if you are lucky it's quite good spot. There is a big traffic, many cars are going direction St. Gallen, Wintherthur (the biggest trafiic is about 3 p.m. when people are going back home from work) but there is no place for them to stop safely. But it's the only place, becouse here starts the tunnel going directly on a highway. You should have a sing with the name of your direction and go with it along the road and wait for a car to stop.―Anonymous, September 2012

Once the roadworks will be finished, it will be a good place. Nevertheless, this is not a good route to St. Gallen and further.―Anonymous, July 2012

Beyond crossroads there is a lot of space to stop and people come mostly from the North. Not a good road to St. Gallen.―Anonymous, July 2012

Parking lot beyond the crossroads direction St. Gallen. There is probably nobody going to St. Gallen, all the people use the motorway.―Anonymous, July 2012

A good place beyond the crossroads but you should wait for someone who goes further (St. Gallen or similar). BTW, this road is not really convenient if you want to get to the border.―Anonymous, July 2012

a perfect relais between ZURICH (or WINTERTHUR) and ST. GALLEN, KONSTANZ (germany) or SCHAFFHAUSEN. you will find a BP petrol station, a restaurant and a small COOP supermarket. you reach this spot conveniently with suburban train (s-bahn) number 7 from zurich or winterthur. get off at 'kempthal station' and wander up the hill (4 minutes) behind the factory buildings. there is many cars stopping at this raststaette. on my personal rating from 1 (poor) to 10 (a very good place) 'rastanlage kempthal' will get a '10'.―Anonymous, December 2010

Great spot for hitching towards Zurich and St. Gallen. Probably harder towards Lausanne. Sign absolutely necessary!rating: 4/5

For hitching EASTBOUND (Winterthur, St. Gallen/Austria) I have never tried myself yet, but will do so soon. I know you can sort of walk onto the lead of the highway but theres no space for the cars to stop. all traffic that comes from the east, needs to get through town, following E41. But they usually use the tunnel. So maybe you only try this point in case the other one at Bucheggstrasse does not work. Catch a tram to Milchbuck (7, 9, 10, 14) and then follow the road to "oerlikon", you will see the signs for the cars pointing out Highway and Wintertur/St.gallenrating: 3/5

For hitching EASTBOUND (St. GALLEN, AUSTRIA) I hitched on sunday noon, lots of traffic still though. result will most likely be better on other days and hourscars who connect to the highway come out of the tunnel and use the next tunnel right away. stand almost on the street with a BIG sign. How to get there: Tram or bus to BUCHEGGPLATZ and walk 2 mins, across the road and to the left. just follow the sings for the cars. the street name is Bucheggstrasse, stand at height of crossing with Guggachstrasse
I got a lift after about 30 mins, considering the time and day it was not too bad.
